PayPal are launching a new App which will allow the UK’s 15 million PayPal customers to use their phone to buy in store through 230 shops owned by the Aurora Fashion Group which includes such retailers as Oasis, Coast and Warehouse.
Cameron McLean, Managing Director, PayPal UK, said:
“Today marks the start of a quiet revolution in the way we shop on the high street. We’ve created a simple, secure way to use a mobile phone to pay in your favourite stores.”
Not only are PayPal teaming up with fashion retailers; they have also agreed terms with Pizza Express to introduce the App to their restaurants. Although this is a new development for the UK high street, the method of paying with the App has been popular in the US where PayPal has successfully partnered with several retailers.
A number of people have voiced concerns over the security of this new technology; for example, what happens if the phone is lost? PayPal have strongly reiterated that safety and security are the heart of everything when it comes to payments online. Users can only use the App when they use a unique locking code that only they should know and regardless, no personal or financial information is stored to the phone.
When paying for an item, a user simply needs to open up the App by entering their pin number. The App will then produce a barcode for the Shop assistant to scan, allowing the shop to withdraw the correct funds from the user’s PayPal account.
Customers can download the app at www.paypal.co.uk/instore.
